FAQS

It’s a specially designed bra with internal pockets to hold your breast form securely in place. These bras are soft, supportive, and come in many styles. A proper fit helps prevent pain in the shoulders, neck, or back and improves comfort throughout your day.

What is a post-mastectomy bra?

Yes. Your fitter will help you choose the best option for your needs:

  • Silicone prostheses: Most closely resemble natural breast tissue and are ideal once healing is complete.
  • Foam or fiberfill forms: Lightweight and can be worn right after surgery or during physical activity.
  • Swim forms: Designed for water use—safe in pools, hot tubs, and saunas.
  • Shapers or partial forms: For women who’ve had lumpectomies or reconstruction and need to restore balance.

Are there different types of breast forms?

A breast prosthesis is a natural-looking, external breast form worn after a mastectomy or lumpectomy. It restores balance, helps with posture, protects surgical scars, and supports your confidence in clothing. Prostheses come in different materials like silicone or lightweight foam and are designed to fit snugly into a post-mastectomy bra.

WHAT IS A BREAST PROSTHESIS?

You’ll meet privately with a certified fitter who will take your measurements, walk you through your options, and help you try on breast forms and bras. Most women leave with their products the same day—unless a specialty item needs to be ordered.

What happens at the fitting?

Bring a well-fitting top so you can see how your new fit looks in your own clothing. If you already have a prescription, bring that too. If not, we can request one from your physician.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Once your surgical site has fully healed—usually 4–8 weeks post-op—you’re ready for a silicone prosthesis fitting. In the meantime, we offer soft forms and camisoles that are safe and comfortable to wear during healing.

When should I schedule my fitting?

Often, it’s the bra—not the prosthesis—that needs adjusting. If the bra isn’t supporting the form correctly, it can pull on your shoulders. A quick refit or updated bra can make a big difference.

My form feels heavy—what should I do?

Many women—especially those with arthritis, lymphedema, or osteoporosis—find lightweight forms more comfortable. Your fitter can help you decide based on your health, lifestyle, and preferences.

Is a lightweight prosthesis right for me?

Not at all. You can continue enjoying the activities you love—like walking, swimming, or sports. We can recommend different forms for active use, leisure, and water.

Will my breast form limit my activities?

Yes. Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurers cover mastectomy supplies with a doctor’s prescription. Coverage often includes:

  • 1 silicone prosthesis every 2 years
  • 2 foam/leisure/swim forms per year
  • 4 post-mastectomy bras per year
  • 2 camisoles after surgery

We handle insurance billing for you and can help confirm what your plan covers. Most clients pay little to nothing out of pocket.

Does insurance cover my mastectomy products?

With proper care, many last for years. Most come with a two-year warranty (excluding damage). We recommend annual fittings since bodies can change over time.

How long does a breast prosthesis last?

Wash it daily with mild soap and water, pat it dry, and store it in its designated box. Avoid perfumes, lotions, and contact with sharp objects, jewelry, or pets. We’ll review all care steps with you during your visit.
